Festival for Photography f/stop Leipzig
f/stop is one of the most important photography festivals in Germany. It was organized for the first time in 2007 by the Centre for Contemporary Photography Leipzig and was held annually until 2010. Since 2012 f/stop has taken place biannually.
Exhibitions and symposia conceived by guest curators offer a platform for artistic, curatorial and academic work that explores social issues utilizing the resources and potential of photography. f/stop Solo presents the work of a single artist. f/stop Print places emphasis on the presentation of books. f/stop Film complements the exhibitions with a film series screened at Luru Kino. Various Leipzig-based organizations, project spaces and galleries enhance the festival with their own events: f/stop Komplizen at the Baumwollspinnerei and f/stop Satelliten in various locations within the city.
From 2007 to 2010 f/stop was directed by festival founder Kristin Dittrich. From 2011 onwards directors Christin Krause and Thilo Scheffler reshaped the festival’s programme and profile. Since 2017 Daniel Niggemann has headed the festival. The 7th f/stop Festival for Photography was held from 25 June to 3 July 2016 in Leipzig under the curatorial direction of Spector Books publishers Anne König and Jan Wenzel. Under the title “the end of the world as we know it, ist der Beginn einer Welt, die wir nicht kennen”, the festival explored the history of the genre of the reportage and examined the question which media representations are best suited to depict an increasingly complex world. With f/stop In Situ works were shown for the first time in public locations: Historical reportages about the city of Leipzig by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, Lee Miller and Margarte Bourke-White once featured in international publications were placed on display at their points of origin.
In 2018 the 8th version of the festival will once again be curated by Anne König and Jan Wenzel. In various exhibitions at the Baumwollspinnerei in Leipzig and with an additional In Situ project in the city, the festival will examine how photography can be utilized to shed light on societal issues and the social fabric as a whole. In what ways can photography be used as a medium of democracy and societal communication? How can mediation and communication processes be documented by means of photography?
